Webster describes devotion as “love, loyalty, or enthusiasm for a person, activity, or cause.” Devotion goes beyond feelings, doubts, or insecurities. Devotion is unrelenting, unyielding, and uncompromising. Oftentimes when we read or hear the word devotion it can be discouraging. We recognize how fully encompassing it is. We are reminded of just how fickle, flaky, and fallible our devotion is towards God. Be encouraged that He knows our weakness, and has gifted us each with a measure of faith. Trust not in your own ability to be devoted to God, but trust in His relentless devotion towards you. He loves you. He is for you. He believes in you. An understanding of God’s devotion towards you will help you face any mountain. Pain, shame, and regret are strong feelings that leave open doors in our life for the enemy of your soul to access. God’s love is more powerful than any pain. His sacrifice is greater than any shame. His redemption covers a multitude of regrets!

Reflection - How can I grow in my devotion to God? We instinctively know exactly what we need to do to satisfy that hunger. Just as our physical bodies experience hunger, so do our spirits. We are cautious with what we allow to satisfy our physical hunger. We need to be all the more mindful as to what we allow our spirits to feed on. Food is fuel. In the same way, the Word of God and prayer fuel our spirits. The Kingdom of God, which is spiritual, is always backward to this physical world. Physically, we eat food when we are hungry to fill us up. Take that method in reverse. To become hungry for things of the spirit, we actually have to consume spiritual things like The Word of God. It produces in us a hunger for the things of God.

Reflection - How hungry am I for the things of God?

Prayer - I want to hunger for the only thing that will bring true satisfaction to a starved soul. There’s seemingly no way to persevere, and not give up as soon as a setback comes. Discouragement sets in like a cancer. Life seems meaningless, and mundane every day that you wake up without purpose. Your efforts towards any finish line will continually rest on moment-by-moment feelings. God created us on purpose and for a purpose. The Bible says David served God’s purpose in his own generation. Your existence right now isn’t happenstance. How depressing would it be to go to the grave having no clue of God’s purpose for your life? Or worse, knowing His purpose for your life is available and then never tapping into it. God created you on purpose and for a purpose! He’s not hiding it; He’s simply waiting for you to discover it, develop it, and deploy it!

Reflection - Do I live life on purpose? That statement is a fact that requires us to do some serious self-reflecting on where we are and acknowledge where we are inevitably going to end up. We live in a time when distraction is literally at our fingertips. Many things compete for your time, and everything is contending to take up your thoughts. Large companies are hiring psychologists to learn how to attract your attention and win your purchases through what could otherwise be considered distracting advertisements. The Word of God helps us in combating distractions by giving clear instructions. Colossians 3:2 challenges us to set our minds above and not things that are eye level. The writer of Hebrews tells us where to set our gaze. The Bible consistently challenges our temporal minds to focus on the things that will last eternally. Jesus was able to endure the pain and shame of the cross because He knew how to see beyond the experience and look forward to the eternal reward.

Reflection - What things in my life are distracting my focus?

Prayer - I want to be a focused person. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.” - Hebrews 11:6

Devotion - Our faith, trust, and dependency on God bring a smile to His face. Every aspect of our walk with God involves faith. We walk by faith, stand on faith, and live by faith. Faith in God is what opens up the door to accessing Him as a father. No one will go to heaven without faith, sins can’t be forgiven without faith, living a life full of joy and hope both presently and hereafter depend upon our faith in Jesus Christ as both Lord and Savior. Faith in God is what settles our anxious souls. John Piper says “He is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.” Maybe your faith is small and lacking. What matters most is not the size of your faith, but where you place your faith.

Reflection - Where am I placing my faith? May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me.” - John 17:23

Devotion - The church must walk in unity before the world sees revival. The greatest testament to the world about God is not a message preached, a food box given out, or a benevolence check written. Although those are all great things… the world will undoubtedly know that The Father sent His only Son when Christian brothers and sisters walk in perfect unity. In all honesty, why would a divided group of people who do not know God be drawn to join another divided group of people that claim to know Him? The enemy has a hay day in a world where the Church can’t get on the same page. Satan isn’t nervous about our religious efforts or whatever self-manufactured things we do to “get God to move.” Unity is what God stands at attention for, and unity makes the ruler of this world, satan, shiver with torment. When the Church walks in perfect unity the world will be turned upside down. A person of unity would reflect the characteristics of Christ: humble, serving, sacrificing, loving, full of grace, and full of truth. Gossip or slander could never be found coming out of His mouth.

Reflection - Am I a person that walks with integrity and displays the characteristics of being in unity?

Prayer - Jesus, help me have a united heart. Jesus sent His best friends on a tiresome journey, yet He knew the first thing needed upon their return. His disciples would be laughed at, treated unfairly, and more than likely not have a place to lay their heads. After being filled up and empowered by the words of the Savior, they began to pour out across the region what had been poured into them. Jesus then welcomed His friends back after their journey. I can hear it now. “Great job. I am so proud of you. I know there is still work left to do. I know people are coming to hear the good news. You must be hungry and your souls must be drained. Before we continue with this great work, let’s rest a while.” We know when our cell phone is running low, it gives us a warning. We know just how long we have until that battery runs out. We move heaven and earth to make sure we get to a charger before it dies. What would life look like if we were that cautious with our souls? Do you ever feel guilty for taking time away to regroup and recharge? Listen to what our Lord says as he welcomes us into that same place where grace flows, and where the Holy Spirit recharges.

Reflection - God created us body, soul, and spirit. Sometimes we run out of patience for ourselves, more frequently it runs out with other people, and, in all honesty, most of us often grow impatient with where we are in life. The Bible says that patience is a fruit of the Spirit and a sign that someone trusts God, even when life isn’t going the way we would prefer. A lack of patience can cause all kinds of hardships, which is pretty ironic because the tough truth is that frustrations, hardships, setbacks, and heartaches are all tools used to help us grow in patience. Over time, we can look back over trying seasons and see God’s hand comforting us in the midst of everything that was working against us. It never feels great in the heat of the battle, but praise God for what is produced in us as a result of things that we face.

Reflection - What things in life tend to get me flustered, frustrated, and impatient? We have been given an incredible gift, one that enables us to offer forgiveness towards others and the opportunity to give a taste of the grace that was so generously offered to us. Forgiveness is easily one of the toughest things to do! The hurt, betrayal, and frustrations others have caused are true and great. However, that pain is poison. Unforgiveness, resentment, and bitterness will rot us from the inside out. Proverbs 1:7

Devotion - Wisdom can be heard through words, seen through actions, and experienced through understanding. The opposite can also be said: foolishness is heard through words, felt through actions, and endured through ignorance. God gives wisdom for free. Read that again. God gives wisdom for free, and yet, most people don’t bother to ask for it, and therefore won’t ever receive it. It’s a tool that God offers us to help navigate life’s circumstances and scenarios. Most would assume wisdom’s kryptonite is foolishness, but the true kryptonite of wisdom is ignorance. As ‘worth-ship,’ we realize that worship is any act of expression that communicates God's worth according to us. Everything that we do gives a glimpse into our belief of who God is and what He’s worth. The way we live, the way we work, the way we treat others, all of these and more depict and show our valuation of God. Two means of worship include our actions and attitude. Some actions of worship are lifting hands, kneeling, serving, and giving offerings. It’s important to note, however, that actions of worship can be self-manufactured and disingenuous. Our attitude in worship, however, is the most telling. Living sacrificially, doing all things well, treating others kindly, and our devotion to God in private reveal our heart’s intent. And while God’s worth-ship is never up for debate or discussion - He is most worthy of all glory, all praise, all honor, and all worship - our response to His worth-ship is dependent upon our knowledge of His goodness, and majesty. So, how do you value God?

Reflection - Do my work ethic, generosity, attitude towards others, and expressions in corporate worship accurately reflect what God means to me?

Prayer - God, You are worthy. I want to live a lifestyle of worship. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” - Luke 6:38

Devotion - Stingy, tight, selfish, cheap, close-fisted. I would venture a guess that these are words you wouldn’t want associated with your character. Could you imagine going to a funeral and hearing, “Here lies ____, the most self-centered person I’ve ever met.” Sounds a bit dramatic, but unfortunately that’s the reality of some people's lives. God is a giver. He is the epitome of generosity. And it’s His desire that we would reflect His heart of generosity to a greedy world. While generosity certainly includes finances, giving is not limited to monetary exchanges. Your time, your talent, and your treasures are all gifts from God. As freely as you have been given those gifts, freely give. The only way to fight against a prideful, stingy heart is to recondition it by giving.

Reflection - Considering how I’ve spent my time, talent, and treasures, if I were to look at my giving habits over the last year, could I say that I was a good steward?

Prayer - God, help me become more generous. But when you follow the revelation of the Word, heaven’s bliss fills your soul." - Proverbs 29:18

Devotion - Vision is not just a lofty idea or concept God holds above our head as something unreachable or incomprehensible. The Hebrew word for vision is “chazown.” Chazown is a prophetic vision or revelation of an intended future specifically given from God to you. Vision is the tool that God uses to help us come to an understanding of our life's purpose. When Nehemiah heard about the broken walls of Jerusalem, his heart ached within him. He began praying and fasting, and eventually, he received a chazown, or vision, from God. What follows is a story that has been heralded over thousands of years as a creative, inspirational, leadership movement. The catalyst of this rebuilding project was a God-sized burden in Nehemiah’s heart to see a broken down city built back to its original honor. With the Holy Spirit's help, a willingness from Nehemiah, favor from the king, companionship from workers, and even the criticism of the naysayers, Sanballat and Tobiah, Nehemiah saw the walls of Jerusalem rebuilt.

Reflection - I’m going to end up somewhere, will that somewhere be on purpose?

Prayer - Lord God, I know that You have a purpose for my life. Understanding the freedom that Jesus offers can be seen as both immediate and progressive. The immediate reality following salvation is a release from the penalty of sin. The progressive reality of salvation is accomplished through sanctification, or our ongoing submission to the Holy Spirit's work in our lives. The story of the nation of Israel’s release from captivity in the Old Testament gives us a picture of Christ’s work in our lives spiritually. The Israelites were released from Egypt (salvation). Then, immediately following their release, they were led through a wilderness (sanctification). And although the people were physically free from Egypt, Egypt was still in their hearts and was on display through their thoughts, attitudes, and disobedience. God wanted to not only get His people out of Egypt, but He wanted to get Egypt out of His people, too. God is still in the business of setting people free today, and you are a candidate!

Reflection - In what area(s) of my life do I need the Holy Spirit to help me find freedom in?

Prayer - Holy Spirit, You are my helper, teacher, and comforter. We live in a fallen world full of corrupt people, and we have been placed on earth during a time period that celebrates sin like no other generation before us. Yet, as believers in Jesus, we are not from this world. This world is not our home; we are simply passing through. Since Jesus’s bodily resurrection, the big ‘C’ Church has been activated to spread the Good News to a lost, dying, and hopeless world. In the original language, ‘church’ literally means “called out ones.” The local church is a group of believers that gathers together to worship God and serve that particular (local) community. God has given clear instructions on the importance of meeting together and what should be accomplished in an assembly. People should be encouraged, trained, rebuked, corrected, instructed, challenged, and equipped. God uses a group of people assembled together called the church to reveal the family dynamics of the Kingdom of God and His character to that community.

Reflection - How can I grow in my involvement, generosity, and love for my church?

Prayer - Thank You for my church. Thank you that I am a part of God’s family. I love my church, and I love and pray for other members and their families. I ask that, as a church family, You would use us to invest in the people around us, to love our neighbors, and to be a part of seeing this city know You, Jesus, in greater ways. I pray that people would know that we are Yours by our love for one another.

This is to show that He is generationally minded. His desire is for us to pass on more than property or a monetary inheritance to those who follow us. His heart is that we would leave a spiritual inheritance that lasts until the coming of His Son, Jesus. Proverbs 13:22 says, “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children…” Thus, leaving a spiritual inheritance is a command from God and must be a commitment of ours. Let’s not focus on meaningless “things” to leave behind. Commit to leaving a burning passion for Jesus to our family, children, and those around us. What one generation tolerates the next generation will embrace.

Reflection - What kind of inheritance am I leaving with the lifestyle I’m living?

Prayer - Father, teach me to live with a generational mindset. The grass withers and the flower fades, but Your Word lasts forever. Help me commit to leaving a passion and hunger for Jesus behind when I come into Your Kingdom. I will focus on legacy rather than dynasty. Help me deposit God-sized investments in those around me that will last eternally.

Rather, thankfulness is a determination to trust in the character of God. There are three major enemies of walking in thankfulness: bitterness, jealousy, and unforgiveness. The world teaches us an empty coping method in saying “it could be worse...” Thankfulness, however, is not a coping method; it is an abiding knowledge that steadfastly believes that God is good, and He is for you regardless of the situation.

Reflection - Help me to see everything through the lens of gratitude.

Prayer - Father, help me be more thankful. A tough truth to admit is that we are always as close to God as we want to be. You might be thinking, life is busy enough as it is, how can I add anything else? Intimacy with God isn’t about the amount of time spent; instead, intimacy flows from honoring God by giving Him priority in everything. Jesus tells us to “seek first the Kingdom of God” (Matthew 6:33). God is relational and desires close fellowship with you! Challenge yourself to start your day by going through this devotional first. Before checking social media, texts, and emails, prioritize being with Jesus FIRST.

Reflection - Holy Spirit, help me identify any area of my life where You don’t have priority.

Prayer - Lord, like David, I want to be a person after Your own heart. Distractions often pull me away from precious time that You desire to spend with me. I want to seek Your will and experience Your presence in every area of my life. Help me set You first in all things. Holy Spirit help me identify distractions, discouragements, and my own selfishness that gets in the way of time spent with You. I love You, Jesus.

Repentance is far from just an apology or a simple acknowledgment of wrongdoing. Repentance is God’s tool of divine redirection; an opportunity to re-route; a subtle, still small voice encouraging a u-turn. God has wired us to be sorrowful for actions that break His heart (conviction), but is life change truly possible if feelings of sorrow are as far as it goes? Repentance is the doorway into the fullness of joy that Jesus offers. God utilizes the feelings associated with conviction to show us how far off we are and how much we need His guidance.

Reflection - Is there anything that I need to repent of?

Prayer - Jesus, examine every area of my life. My thoughts, my actions, my intentions, my motives, and my desires. Anything in me that is not like You, point out to me. Help me live a lifestyle of repentance.
